Shakespeare Unrehearsed: Taming of the Shrew
directed by Ben Stockman
New England Youth Theatre’s Alumni Association continues its annual tradition of fundraising performances for its parent organization with Shakespeare Unrehearsed: The Taming of the Shrew. One of the Bard's most controversial and divisive comedies, Shrew centers around the courtship of Katharine, the headstrong and impudent daughter of a wealthy Padua merchant, and Petruchio, a boldly brash gentleman of Verona with an eye on Katharine's dowry.
In their third attempt to authentically emulate the Elizabethan-era process of theatrical production, NEYT’s alumni will be performing the show with no more than 10 hours of rehearsal. In Shakespeare’s day, rigorous performance schedules and reliance on sunlight allowed for precious little rehearsal time: actors would perform one show per day, six days a week. Like the Lord Chamberlain’s Men before them, the young actors from throughout NEYT’s history will find themselves thrust headfirst into the world of Shakespeare’s rich wordplay, imagery, and wit. NEYT alumnus Ben Stockman directs.
Shows will be at 7PM on January 5th and 2PM on January 6th. Tickets are only available at the door for a suggested donation of $10 - payment by cash or check only. All proceeds will be donated to NEYT’s “Angels in the Wings” scholarship fund.
