Dear Actors,
Auditons for "The Fiddler On The Roof" will be held in the NEYT Main Theatre on Sunday, September 12th. Everyone of you will be required to stay with us for the entire audition time, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, or at least until we finish with everyone which might be a wee bit earlier, but no way to know, so please plan on staying the whole time, thanks.
We request that you all come to the theatre twenty minutes before the start time, that is at 2:40 PM, to sign in and get yourself prepared. Then everyone will watch the audition of everyone else in a festive and supportive environment. I will warm up your acting muscles up and Becky and Kristin will warm up your voices. The audition process will be fun and run as follows:
NOTE: We will NOT be asking you for a monologue for this audition.
FIRST: we will have each of you (in the order that you signed in) sing 16 bars of a song of your choice, preferably from "Fiddler", but you may choose any song from a musical that you really love and identify with. If your song is from a musical other than "Fiddler On The Roof", please bring in the piano sheet music with you, pressed to lay flat on the piano, to enable Becky to accompany you. Thanks.
SECOND: we will have you sing a musical scale to determine your singing range, highest and lowest note you can sing with comfort.
THIRD: we will send you with partners to different parts of the theatre to practice reading scenes from "Fiddler" that we will choose and have ready for you to pick up from the NEYT office in advance. The scenes we select will be available at the office on Thursday, August 5th. Each one of the chosen scenes will be photo copied and placed in a separate folder. Each scene will involve various characters from the musical, so look at each folder and decide which of the scenes have character(s) in them that you might want to play. Take copies of those scenes home with you to practice, in fact even memorize if you have the will and gumption to do that. Find a friend or parent to read the scene with you, understand what it is you want, as a character, in the scene and what you do/say to obtain that "objective". Do your best in practicing to make the scene come alive.
FOURTH: after everyone has had a chance to read over the scenes in various parts of the building, we will all come together and mix and match pairs/groups, having everyone read several scenes with several different people to see how well you listen and act with other actors, how well you focus, how much imagination you bring to the reading of a character and scene. This will help us decide which character(s) in the play would suit you and who we want to cast in the show as "name character parts" and as "ensemble/chorus" parts.
FIFTH: After the audition we will confer and cast the show as soon as we are able. We will email out the casting and post it in the NEYT lobby within about a weeks time. Have fun reading the scenes and practicing your song.
We look forward to this very fun audition.
Uncle Stevie
