SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT- February 10, 2018
The May Award Committee announce that this year's May Award will be limited to one award of $10,000. The program ends with this award, as the donors have decided to steer their generous contribution to the future of NEYT in another direction. Again- there will be only one award, and that will be $10,000.
The May Award
The May Award, funded by a very generous grant from an anonymous donor, is awarded to NEYT graduates who are currently in a program or are currently applying to a program of professional training, conservatory, or theater major, and who intend to continue on a path of professional training in the performing arts. This can mean both performance and technical work in theater, film, and TV. Applicants will need to show proof that they have auditioned and/or interviewed successfully for, and have been accepted into, a recognized program of professional development in an appropriate field of further education.
The minimum age for application is 21 on or by May 31 in the year of application. The application will consist of written answers to questions on an application form, and an interview, preferably in person, with the May Award Committee. Because applicants will not have appeared on the NEYT stage for several years, they will be required to submit video examples of recent work, to include at least one monologue, and one scene with a scene partner, which they feel show their growth and their best current work. It may also be useful to prepare audition material for a live interview in Brattleboro, or via Skype. Applicants who are not actors ( e.g. writers, designers, directors )will be expected to present their portfolios of work done after NEYT. All NEYT alumni are welcome to apply if they meet the above criteria.
The intentions of the donors of this very generous award are that successful applicants will, in time, give back to NEYT with their time, and eventually with donations to NEYT’s annual appeal, as their careers grow and their work is rewarded. The award consists of two- $10,000, or one- $20,000, each year, with a maximum award of $20,000 to any individual. Disbursements will be made in two payments- one at the time of awarding by the Committee, and the other half paid in December of the same calendar year.
The donors intend eventually to scale back their financial support of NEYT, and they feel strongly that building alumni loyalty and financial support will be the best way forward for NEYT. Their intention is to spur the growth of committed actors and technicians in the theatrical world, help their careers, and thereby eventually help to build the financial strength of NEYT.
The committee will consist of some NEYT faculty and staff, and some community members outside of NEYT. They will consider the NEYT career of all applicants, the level of commitment, energy, and determination shown by applicants during their years at NEYT, and of course the quality of their work.
Applications will be considered during April. Qualified applicants will be invited to an interview in the first half of May , in person in Brattleboro, or by Skype or phone. Supporting materials must be received in Brattleboro by the application deadline to qualify for consideration.
